Transit Vedha: When a Good Transit Is Blocked
Looking only at which house a planet transits gives half the picture. The texts say that even when a planet is in a good house, another planet sitting in a particular house can block the good result. The block is called vedha, and the house that causes it the vedha house.
The pairs
Counted from the moon sign; the left number is the good house, the right its vedha house:
| Planet | Good house → vedha house |
|---|---|
| Sun | 3→9, 6→12, 10→4, 11→5 |
| Moon | 1→5, 3→9, 6→12, 7→2, 10→4, 11→8 |
| Mars | 3→12, 6→9, 11→5 |
| Mercury | 2→5, 4→3, 6→9, 8→1, 10→8, 11→12 |
| Jupiter | 2→12, 5→4, 7→3, 9→10, 11→8 |
| Venus | 1→8, 2→7, 3→1, 4→10, 5→9, 8→5, 9→11, 11→6, 12→3 |
| Saturn, Rahu, Ketu | 3→12, 6→9, 11→5 |
How to read it: say Jupiter is in the eleventh from your moon sign, a good position. If another planet is in the eighth at the same time, the benefit of Jupiter's eleventh-house transit is blocked or greatly reduced.
Two exceptions
- The Sun and Saturn are father and son and do not cause vedha to each other.
- The Moon and Mercury are mother and son and do not either.
So if the Sun is in a good house and Saturn in its vedha house, no vedha is counted, and vice versa.
Reverse vedha
Many astrologers also apply the reverse: when a planet is in a bad house and another planet stands in the corresponding reverse vedha house, the bad result is blocked too. With Saturn in the twelfth from the moon sign (the start of sade sati) and a planet in the third, the pressure of Saturn's twelfth-house transit is held to ease somewhat. Authorities differ on this.
How much it matters
Vedha is felt most in the transits of slow planets, because they last long. The Moon's vedha lasts hours or a day or two, so it plays a small part in daily results. Suvolagna's horoscope engine checks vedha for the major planets for every sign every day; when a planet is blocked, the reading says so in its own sentence.
An example
For someone with an Aries moon sign, Jupiter moves into Aquarius, the eleventh: a time of income and wishes fulfilled. Meanwhile Mars is in Scorpio, the eighth from Aries. The eighth is the vedha house for Jupiter's eleventh, so for this stretch Jupiter's benefit does not fully arrive. When Mars moves on into Sagittarius the vedha lifts and Jupiter's good results open up again.
