What Is the Lagna (Ascendant), How It Is Found, and Why Birth Time Matters
Because the earth turns on its axis, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon once in twenty-four hours. The sign rising at the exact moment of birth is the lagna. It becomes the first house, and the other eleven are counted from it, which is why the lagna is called the backbone of the chart.
Lagna and moon sign
Two people born on the same day may share a moon sign, because the Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days. Born in the morning and in the evening, their lagnas will be completely different. So:
- The moon sign (rashi) speaks of mind, mood, daily results and dasha.
- The lagna speaks of body, appearance, life direction and which house each planet occupies.
A sound reading needs both. Suvolagna's horoscopes are written for the moon sign, but if you know your lagna you can read that sign's horoscope as well.
How fast the lagna changes
On average every two hours, but signs do not all take the same time to rise. At the latitude of Dhaka or Kolkata, Pisces, Aries and Aquarius rise in roughly an hour and a half, while Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio take close to two and a half. The further north, the bigger the difference.
So if a birth falls near the start or end of a lagna, five or ten minutes can change it, and with it the house of every planet.
How the lagna is calculated
In the days of hand calculation astrologers used the lagna tables in the panjika, counting from sunrise. Today it is computed directly:
- Local birth time is converted to universal time (UTC).
- The sidereal time at that moment and the birthplace's longitude give the point overhead (the midheaven).
- The latitude and the tilt of the earth's axis give the point rising in the east: the tropical ascendant.
- Subtracting the ayanamsha gives the sidereal (Vedic) lagna.
Suvolagna's birth chart page does this calculation in your browser with the Lahiri ayanamsha.
If the birth time is uncertain
Many birth times are written loosely: "morning", "at the call to prayer", "just before dusk". Some options:
- Look for hospital papers, an old horoscope or a family diary.
- An experienced astrologer can test which of two possible lagnas fits the person's build, looks and major life events. This is called birth-time rectification.
- With no time at all even the moon sign can be uncertain. The traditional fallback is the name-letter horoscope by the first letter of the name.
The lord of the lagna
The ruler of the lagna's sign is the lagna lord. Strong in a kendra or trikona, it shows someone who can stand on their own feet; weak in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, it points to more obstacles. The first question in reading any chart is: where is the lagna lord?
Common questions
Are the lagna and the moon sign the same?
No. The moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at birth; the lagna is the sign rising in the east at that moment. They can differ or coincide.
What is needed to find the lagna?
The date, the exact time and the place of birth (town or village, so that latitude and longitude can be found).
How often does the lagna change?
About every two hours on average, but anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours depending on the sign and the latitude.
